as we approach the end of our two free weeks of netflix, we are cancelling before we ever really got started. the turnaround time between returning the first dvd and receiving the second one will have reached eight days tomorrow, which means it would be unlikely that we would be able to watch a movie each weekend on the “one-movie-out-at-a-time” plan. sometime after mb returns from her 24hrs-in-atlanta next weekend, we will probably try blockbuster’s version of the online rental scheme.

the one netflix movie we did watch was hotel rwanda. to me, this is a moving, even if sanitized, depiction of the genocide. (i once was a t.a. for a course on intergroup conflict and helping behavior, and the prof was doing reconciliation work in rwanda after the genocide. the “real-life” things i saw and heard about in that class were much more disturbing than the what was depicted in this engaging, excellent and disturbing film.) only half joking, i told one of my classes that i believed that if a person does not cry when watching this movie, he or she is probably just a bad person.

I am sorry that the netflix experiment did not work out. I guess that is why it was an experiment. We are still reaping the benefits of the Blockbuster class-action lawsuit and using all of our $1-off and free-movie coupons, so we will be sticking with our local rental store for the time being.
