Do you think readers of the New York Review of Books are really so techilliterate that it was necessary for Sarah Boxer to define emoticons? I want to scoff, but then I think: “It’s the New York Review of Books! Of course its readers need definitions of emoticons.” And so I am caught between poles of savvy and stodgy, and know not which way to turn.
